About Aventuras After School
Aventuras After School is our Spanish enrichment program for children in Kindergarten up to 5th grade. The program is held Monday - Friday, right after school to 6:30 p.m. and we are pleased to provide complimentary bus transportation from several elementary schools to WKA. (Ashburton, Farmland, Garrett Park, Kensington Parkwood, Luxmanor and Wyngate) Parents may pick up children from our convenient location as late as 6:30 p.m.
Aventuras was developed out of our passion and desire to continue offering children a warm, safe and loving place to come in the summer or after a long day of school AND to continue their opportunities to learn Spanish through hands-on activities, loads of fun and a full immersion environment! Our program is open to children with all levels of Spanish language, from beginner to fully bilingual. The beauty of an immersion program is the children will pick up what they can at their own pace and our teachers will be sure to challenge each child at his/her unique ability level.
While Spanish enrichment is an important aspect of our Aventuras program, there are so many great features for children to enjoy as well! Here is a typical day at Aventuras After School....
What Does a Typical Day at Aventuras After School Look Like?
Children will be greeted (in Spanish!) by their friendly Aventuras counselors as they get off the school bus and head directly to our playgrounds for some much needed fresh air, exercise and time with friends. Their counselors will vary their outdoor time throughout the year providing opportunities for open-ended play, guided games and activities, nature hikes to the stream and team sports or challenges.
Following outdoor play, the children will head up to their large, light-filled classroom to enjoy a healthy, nutritious snack and begin Spanish enrichment. Each week, we have identified two Spanish learning goals for children, which are based on developing a skill rather than the memorization of words or a phrase. We have pulled relevant "I Can" Statements from the American Council on Teaching Foreign Languages proficiency guidelines and will work throughout the school year to add 1-2 skills to children's language skillset each week. Some examples include "I Can Say Where I Went", "I Can Describe an Object", "I Can Order a Meal", or "I Can Ask Questions About My Friends". Children will learn these skills through daily practice in responding to questions orally and on a large white board. They will role play, do a variety of activities and games together to reinforce what they're learning and every time someone uses their Spanish in a new way, it's celebrated by adding their quote to the "I Can" Board or adding marbles to our Spanish Goals jar toward a fun celebration of some sort.
Once our designated Spanish enrichment time is over, the Spanish doesn't end! We continue our day with counselors leading all direction and activities in Spanish, as the children move on to other fun activities. On Mondays, we do sports and games (this could be an intense game of Capture the Flag, an easy going game of basketball or kickball or it could be a ping-pong and board game challenge. On Tuesdays we create works of art utilizing all of the great materials from our art and maker's space. We draw, paint, collage, sew, create and more. On Wednesdays and Thursdays we complete cool new STEM projects - we may be taking apart an old printer or computer, testing our Raspberry Pi, working with Lego Robotics kits or trying some new trick with our Makey Makeys. Fridays are always a kid favorite as we LOVE to cook something new and delicious and enjoy it together!
Following activities, kids get to take some free choice time and visit the center that most interests them. We have a fun LEGO wall, building center, woodworking area, coding center, art and makerspace, open-ended play area, cozy reading corner, board games and a ping-pong table set up for kids' free choice time. Children can connect with their peers through their interests and favorite activities.
Additionally, we have a homework table designated for children that want or need some quiet space to complete their homework each day and counselors will be on hand to answer questions or guide children through a challenge as needed.
When parents come to pick up each day, our friendly counselors will be here to greet you and fill you in your child's afternoon. You will also receive a daily photo and update through our Brightwheel app and even more information and photos will be sent out in our Friday newsletters.
