K-2 Program at Whole Kids Academy

Whole Kids Academy is pleased to offer a K-2 program for children and families craving a hands-on, engaging and academically rigorous educational program.  Children can count on spending their school year in a warm, familiar, and loving learning environment where they may continue to learn and be challenged through engaging, hands-on activities.  Our team is dedicated to nourishing children’s hearts and minds, while teaching them the skills and language necessary to advocate for themselves, think critically, and use their creativity and ingenuity to solve problems.

Our Kindergarten program will serve as a continuation of our preschool program, offering full Spanish immersion which gives children the added benefit of another year of Spanish and also learning to read and write in the language. With the exception of limited English Language Arts (ELA) instruction and addressing social-emotional needs, children may expect to receive full instruction in Spanish throughout their school day. Additionally, children will receive instruction targeting all MCPS Kindergarten learning objectives including letter sounds, phonemic awareness, word families, sight words, writing and print, mathematic concepts, and early science and social study skills, and have daily opportunity to engage in music, art, physical education and other life skill activities. Project based learning and unit studies throughout the year will provide children with opportunities to explore their individual interests and build upon their creativity, motivation, problem-solving skills and confidence.

Our 1st and 2nd grade program will be moving toward a private school model and accreditation, but keeping the core values of our previous homeschool co-op. Our goal is to reignite children’s curiosity and love for learning this year through stimulating lessons, hands-on learning and activities that both challenge and inspire them to dig deeper.  While core academic subjects of history and ELA will be taught in English each day, our afternoons will take place in our tried-and-true Spanish immersion model, with all instruction and conversations led by a native Spanish speaking teacher.  Academics will go hand in hand with our desire to invest deeply in children’s continued social-emotional growth and development.  Our team is dedicated to nourishing children’s hearts and minds, while teaching them the skills and language necessary to advocate for themselves, think critically and use their creativity and ingenuity to solve problems.

Curriculum and Educational Philosophy

We believe that all children should be seen as individuals and that each child’s educational path provides the opportunity for a unique learning experience. While Whole Kids Academy’s K-2 program will align with Montgomery County Public School’s benchmarks and objectives to ensure children stay on par with their peers and meet the expectations for their grade level, we want to provide children experiences that will expand their curiosity and wonder beyond MCPS’s standards.

We believe in small group instruction and one-on-one support from our most tenured teachers will allow your child the opportunity to move through our curricula at his or her own pace, advancing in areas of strength and interest. We know that one teacher has the ability to alter the course of a child, which is why our K-2 teachers and staff have been hand-picked for their roles. Every teacher within our program meets stringent requirements for education and experience, to ensure they are well prepared to meet the academic, social and emotional needs of each child.

Spanish remains a key component in our curriculum, as we believe all children should have access to expand their language, communication and comprehension prior to their middle school years. By implementing an immersion rich curriculum, children are provided direct instruction from native Spanish speakers allowing for life-long benefits of core executive functions including increased problem solving, self-awareness, self-regulation, self-motivation and working memory.

Our Spanish-Immersion model provides an additional element to our specials, physical education, cooking, art, music and STEM as children are already engaged in these kid-favorite subjects, the language aspect encourages children to use their communication skills and reinforce what they are learning in a fun new way.

We know that the early school years provide a short window of opportunity to tap into each child’s unique learning lens and provide an engaging academic experience. We aim to reach each child’s natural curiosity through our hands-on approach to learning, creating a life-long thirst for knowledge and making an impact in the educational future of each child who walks through our doors.
